Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery training involves eight or more years after graduation from medical school gaining technical skill and expertise, initially in general surgery and then in all aspects of Plastic, Reconstructive and Cosmetic Surgery.

This, as well as an artistic sensitivity for contours and proportions, is paramount to the creation of optimal results.

Such broad expertise enables the provision of comprehensive advice on the whole range of techniques available to achieve the desired aesthetic result. Many who seek cosmetic surgery are not best suited for the procedure that they initially request. It must be remembered that, historically, cosmetic surgery evolved from reconstructive plastic surgery techniques.

Formal surgical training also provides the expertise necessary to deal appropriately and efficiently with any postoperative complications which, although uncommon, may occur.

Beware of the practitioners with limited training and techniques available. "If all you have is a hammer everything becomes a nail".
